“Everything Happens for a Reason”
“Learn to Appreciate”

The Young me

I came from a broken family. My parents divorced when I was 11. My 5 years old brother and I were brought up by my grandma and aunt. With a broken family background, I never had the chance to enjoy luxurious stuffs and overseas trips. I had to work during holiday breaks to self-sustain my expenses as I was not given any allowance. I’ve always envied friends who get to go overseas with their parents and seldom worry about money issue.

Call Centre

My first full time job after graduation was call centre customer service in year 2002. Training was interesting and colleagues were fun. However, real job and training is different. I had to sit down most of the time and answer to some unreasonable and rude callers. I can’t help but feel that there is no job satisfaction and prospect there. Hence, after 1 month on job, I resigned.

Not for profit organisation

I was so excited and happy when I got into this organisation as marketing executive. I’ll be going to companies to do presentations. It will definitely be a good exposure to my resume and inter-personal growth. Nonetheless, after some time, I found out that my main job is doing “sales” in terms of the amount of donation to my organisation.

I got an increment of $100 after 6 months. I felt that it’s not justifiable because regardless of how much my “sales” is, I’m still getting the same salary. On top of that, I’m not happy with our management’s system as well as office politics. I finally left after enduring for 1 year.

Marketing Communication

This time, my job is marketing-communication executive. Even though the pay is lower than my previous job, I accepted it. I get to learn new things like how to do up brochures, magazine and website, basically anything that’s got to do with communication collaterals with clients. I need to be very resourceful and work within very short timeframe to produce our marketing products.

Initially, I thought it’ll be great to learn so many new things. However, during the 1 month, I was super stressed by the deadline of so many brochures and magazines. There were so many things I need to handle and so much things that I don’t know due to the lack of Mar-Com background. I eventually quit without a job.

A Lost, Confused me

I cried while talking to Lifen, one of my best friends. She was shocked when she heard me crying. I was always perceived as a happy go lucky and optimistic girl. I keep questioning myself, “Am I a job-hopper?” “Why can’t I stay in a job for long?” “Why is it that I can’t find a job with good pay, good working environment, good prospect, good boss and management and good colleagues?” I really envy Lifen when she told me about her good pay, extra commission, good working environment & boss.

That was the first time she introduced Peter Tan Organiastion, PTO ®, and opened the insurance career to me. I remember vividly what Lifen said, “You are very suitable to do sales. You’ll make a good sales person.” I was extremely skeptical about insurance line that time. I will NEVER take up a job with no basic pay. NEVER want to do sales and especially insurance line, due to the bad impression. I had the typical obstacles everyone faces. Market too saturated, pay unstable, I don’t want to approach my families and friends, very difficult to find new clients etc.

Nonetheless, I met up with Peter for an interview. He assured me one most important point. “You don’t need to sell to your families and friends. We approach strangers.” “You are not just joining insurance for life career. It’s entrepreneurship when you join us.”

As I’m still feeling unsure and half-convinced, Lifen invited me to their annual awards night.
It was a night that I still remember vividly. On top of an infrequent sumptuous dinner, there were lucky draws for advisers and guest. So lucky! My name was called. I got a $50 taka voucher! J However, the most shocking and memorable one was a $10,000 cold hard CASH draw for advisers. The more sales the adviser did, the higher the chance of getting this $10,000.

I was so shocked when the winning adviser went up to collect that one piece of $10,000 CASH. At that time, my bank’s savings was merely $2000+ for many years of working part-time and full time. It will probably take me another 3-4 years or even 5 years just to accumulate to $10,000 savings. Not forgetting I need to pay off school loan and NO traveling is allowed for that few years. I was stunned! “$10,000 was ALOT of money man! How I wish I got the chance too. Sigh”

Thereafter, Lifen invited me to their selection camp and motivation session to have a feel of their culture. I had a culture shock. It was so different from my previous companies. There were singing, cheering and Peter’s motivating speech. With a curious mind, I decided to join and give it a try.

My PTO® Life

I felt very excited on my first day and very much look forward to my first case! I approached strangers with enthusiasm. I did not give up easily when people reject or shun me. I kept approaching people non-stop. With the help of my seniors, I closed 2 cases on my first day and they are strangers! I start to believe that I’m actually suitable to do sales and I’m in fact a natural sales person.

I was top 3 advisers in our organisation for my first month! Peter asked me to share how I did it during our motivation session. Top 3 advisers also get a chance to enjoy high class dinner with Peter at Tower Club. It was such a memorable night. I’ve never stepped into such high class place before. There’s even a performance related to chocolate. So lifestyle! Tell you a secret, my first month’s commission was already $2000! J

Every night, I would shared my happiness and excitement with my boyfriend, Smith. I seemed to have endless things to tell him every day. He must be overwhelmed by my excitement in this career that he decided to give it a try too. My powerful aura also hit my best friend, Huiyi, because she ended up joining too! Lifen, Huiyi and I are close friends, so I’m very happy that I’m working together with all my close ones.

Achievement comes with hard work. I work from 10am to 10pm, almost every day for the first few months. It was tedious and tiring; however, the joy of closing cases and seeing my commission rolling kept my spirit going. There are bound to be ups and downs in this industry but I’m grateful that I have a lot of dedicated seniors that guided me along the way. This is the sharing culture that Peter has always emphasized on; Love, trust, respect.

My lifestyle grows with my wealth. Restaurants, movies, overseas trips were too expensive for me and Smith when we are salaried employees. Now we can eat and watch movie anytime, fully sponsor parents overseas without the worry for money. I get to pamper myself while buying lots of diamonds and branded stuffs. I’ll always buy bird nest, chicken essence etc for grandma whenever I go visit her. These are luxurious items that she’ll never spend on herself. She always teaches me to be thrifty. I love my grandma.

My Trips

My first plane ride was at age 24! It’s a company’s incentive trip to Bangkok. I finally get to travel! Yeah! However, that is not the most meaningful part of the trip. The most meaningful and wonderful part is I get to travel with lots of colleagues and Smith! It’s always lots of fun to have many friends around. I started to love my “job” more and more.
The more effort I put in to get more sales, the more remuneration I get. I am getting what I’m worth. I also gain lots of precious overseas experiences and most importantly, fun-loving colleagues. As long I put in effort and constantly upgrade myself, situations like retrenchment, pay-cut, demotion, will not affect me. I determine my sales, I control my fat

I became an Executive Financial Consultant in 2008 and my biggest pride is to hit Star Club every year. Star Club represents the top 5% of advisers in Prudential. It also implies that I get to go traveling free every year! Peter always says we are full time advisers, part time travelers. I totally agree! I’ll travel at least 4 countries each year free, taking quality airline and staying five stars hotels. This is a complete luxury for me.

I’ve been to Prague, Vancouver, Seattle, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines, Phuket, Bangkok, Penang, Star Cruise, Dubai, Osaka, Tokyo, Paris, Vietnam, Shanghai, lifestyle trip on Yacht and many more in 5 years. These are like our free honeymoon trips. Life is so exciting!
Looking forward

There are 3 paths in PTO® that we can move into after few years of consultant’s life.

First is to remain as consultants. I chose this path as I enjoy my financial planning career and maintaining close relationship with clients. I have to manage my time carefully so that I have sufficient time to work as well as to enjoy my ‘tai tai’ lifestyle-Spa, massage, travel and shopping. So happy!

Second is to step into management level, to recruit, train and groom people to greater heights. Smith took this path and he gets a lot of satisfaction when the consultants he groomed achieve their goals. Being rich can be lonely. In contrast, it’ll be great fun when one is rich and with a lot of friendships.

Last but not least, exhibit the entrepreneurship in us, start our own business. Financial planning serves as a platform to accumulate a lot of money at a fast rate and eventually accumulate enough capital start our own business. Ideas without capital are nothing.

Other than play and work, self improvement is very important. Peter constantly improves himself and spends thousands of dollars to attend courses. We must always appreciate and not take for granted to have such good boss. I get to attend courses like Neuro-Linguistic-Program (NLP), Leadership Conference, Wealth Management course and many others which mould me to be a better and more intellectual person.

A Grateful Me

I’ll always be grateful to Lifen who brought me in. I’m thankful to Peter who develops a set of working cultures and efficient system for success.

Whenever I got problems or feeling low, Smith is always there to support me and be my soul mate. When I get complacent, he’ll encourage me to work.

Most importantly, I am grateful to my beloved grandma and aunt who brought me up and shower me with love.

“Everything happens for a Reason” and we must “Learn to Appreciate” from it.

Food for Thought

If my parents never divorce, I wouldn’t be so independent.
If I never met Smith, I’ll not know married life can be so fun.
If I never encounter bad working experiences, I’ll never join this industry.
If I never join this industry, I’ll not be able to enjoy my current lifestyle.
If I was never poor, I’ll not appreciate my richness now.
If I never travel much, I’ll not realize Singaporeans are so fortunate.
I am fortunate!

Whenever one encounter something bad, think positively and learn from it.
There’s no failure, only feedback.
